Our Unstoppable God Does Impossible Things

by Dorian Watson, Financial Assistant

“I’m just one hundred and one, five months and a day.”

“I can’t believe that!” said Alice.

“Can’t you?” the Queen said in a pitying tone. “Try again: draw a long breath, and shut your eyes.”

Alice laughed. “There’s no use trying,” she said: “One can’t believe impossible things.”

“I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

It is amazing how God can impact us through the most unexpected things. Alice in Wonderland was reimagined as a live action film not too long ago and took inspiration from Lewis Carroll’s Alice stories, the original story and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass.

In the film, Alice is facing the formidable Jabberwocky. At first, she is unwilling to acknowledge that she is the foretold Champion who will slay the beast. Eventually she comes to terms with it, but she is still uncertain about her ability to accomplish what has been spoken about her. As she is standing before the beast, she begins to remember that impossible things can be done and starts to declare them out loud. “I try to believe in as many as six impossible things before breakfast. Count them, Alice. One, there are drinks that make you shrink. Two, there are foods that make you grow. Three, animals can talk. Four, cats can disappear. Five, there is a place called Underland. Six, I can slay the Jabberwocky.”

Like Alice, God has declared that you are a Champion who will overcome a great beast. And like Alice, many of us have a hard time believing that we are a great Champion. We struggle to embrace the identity that we have been given as a co-heir with Christ and a child of God. We look at all of our imperfections or inexperience or outward appearance and declare that we are unqualified to be identified as a winner. But Jesus tells us in Matthew 19:26, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” God has made it possible for each of us to be Champions through Christ.

So no matter what beast you are facing today – doubt, worry, fear, addiction, pain, the devil – know that God has already declared that you are more than a conqueror through Jesus (Romans 8:37). You are a Champion! Declare it out loud and take the head of your enemy as your trophy (1 Samuel 17:54) for you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13).
